What to Do When Your Bathroom Drain Is Clogged

If lately, you’ve been noticing a noticeable degree of slowness in the draining of your sink or odd sounds coming from inside the sink, you’re most likely dealing with a clogged drain, and you have a short amount of time until this situation turns into a disaster called a complete clog that causes backup and damage to your plumbing system. So, this issue needs to be addressed as soon as possible. In this article, we’ll go over some of the ways you can handle these clogs, but if these methods aren’t working, it is best to leave it to the plumbers of Mr. Rooter Plumbing to be safe.

Baking Soda and Vinegar

This is one of the most common techniques, but it is famous for a reason. The ingredients are very simple. First of all, if there’s water inside the sink because of the clog, remove it (while wearing gloves, of course). After this, all you need to do is to combine one-third cup vinegar and one-third cup baking soda in a cup and immediately pour it down the drain. You’ll begin to observe the bubbling action, which is the key to removing the clogs. After letting it sit for about an hour, pour hot water and see if the clog disappeared. If it didn’t, you can repeat this process a few more times.

Another Classic—The Plunger

When the baking soda and vinegar combination doesn’t work out, this is the next step. Plungers work by creating a tight seal and using pressure to capture the clog. So, fill the sink with enough water to cover around the plunger's bell. When a seal is created, press down and pump strongly several times. Hopefully, the pressure is sufficient to dissolve the clog. Afterwards, run water to see if the clog went away.

Drain Snake

Snake drain is another good method to remove the clogs that are relatively more stubborn and don’t go away with plunging or baking soda. You can grab a drain snake from a hardware store, but make sure to get the size right for your drain. Send the snake down the pipe until you reach the clog, then twist the snake into the clog and then pull it back.

Avoid Chemical Cleaners

One warning that is worth mentioning is regarding the harsh chemicals. Even though liquid drain cleaners seem like a very hassle-free option, over time these chemicals can seriously damage the interiors of your pipes and damage your plumbing system altogether. So, if the methods we have talked about here still aren’t working, the best option is contacting professionals.

Reliable Plumbing Services

Of course it’s very important to know what to do in this scenario. However, preventing the situation altogether is better. To avoid clogs in your bathrooms as much as possible, we advise you to always use drain covers so soap residue or hair will not be accumulating inside your pipes, and make sure to avoid flushing anything other than waste from your toilets. Finally, contact professionals at Mr. Rooter Plumbing to get your plumbing system checked up regularly to prevent clogs and leaks. We offer a variety of both maintenance and repair plumbing services. So, if you’re dealing with a clogged drain line, all you have to do is to give us a call.
